Goodbye January, Hello Febuary

By Epistate, 6. Feb 06.

Well I couldn’t be more happy to see Janaury end. Even though I was vacation for nearly half the month, January wore me out. I had to play way more than usual and I like to and still didn’t make enough money. With my rent, bills, and other exspenses included, I did not make enough to profit any for the month. I didn’t lose per se, just didnt make enough. The only good thing that came from it was I reached platinum level on stars in like 2 weeks from having to play long sessions since I was stuck early often.

I vowed to turn things around in Febuary, and so far so good. Ive won all five days so far and hope to keep it up. I’ve been playing pretty solid and not been getting out of line or try to bully people who wont lay down, which has been a problem in the past, live anyways. I played 30/60 again the day before the super bowl. It was an ecspecially good game. I didn’t get much of the weaker player’s money before they left but still felt I played pretty good. I had one hand that bothered me. I 3 bet QQ and the original raiser 4 bet me out of position. The flop was all low cards with 2 diamonds and he bet and I call. The turn was the Ace of diamonds and he bet out and I mucked. I didnt have the Queen of diamonds. The reason why this hand bothers me is that there was a decent chance he didn’t have an ace. I thought about raising but couldn’t. Im not sure he would 4 bet me HU out of position with an Ace unless he had AA. I felt that KK was more likely. If I would have raised he might have folded the best hand. He might not of though. He might have had the King of diamonds and called me and I would have been hard pressed to fire again on the river.

Tomarrow night I am heading to Commerce Casino in LA to play for 5 or 6 days. I heard the games are wild and I am hoping to be able to keep my head on straight and book a decent week if not great. The WPT is in town and although I am not playing in any tournments, I am taking 5% of someone else’s action. Since I have no chance at cashing big in a tournment, I am putting my money in someone that does. It is only 5%, so he will have to cash pretty big for it to make a significant difference, but at least I have a chance. The only catch is that the main event is a 10K so his results in that will be way more important than the other 4 events. But I can always dream of an impromptu trip back to LA at the end of the month with a duffel bag to pick up a large sum of money.

I want to give you some insight about this hand. You can go ahead and raise the turn even if you think he might have KK, because he will not 3 bet you with KK (unless he is hyper aggressive) but he MIGHT fold AND you are in position. This is your chance to win the pot right here.

If he is a solid player and does happen to have QQ or KK it’s more likely that he’ll lay his hand down rather than re-raise you on the turn.

Also, keep in mind he may have JJ or the other QQ, and the river will most likely go Check/Check (unless a diamond comes, in which case you can safely fold). Now, if you raise the turn and he calls you gain an extra bet if the Queen happens to hit the river, because in that case you’d bet again and get paid off by KK or any Ace.

“and I would have been hard pressed to fire again on the river.”

You DO NOT have to bet the river if you raise the turn and he calls. If a blank hits the river you can rest assure he will check-call you so don’t bother betting.

If you raise the turn it would be the same as if a blank hit the turn and river. He would lead, then you call the turn, and the same on the river. It’s the same number of bets. However, you might just get him to fold; that’s the biggest difference.

$30-60 is a transitional game, especially in Vegas. People are trying to experiment for the most part. They play aggressive with only really good hands pre-flop, the better players play more marginal hands pre-flop in later positions, and the serious players all try to make good calls and/or laydowns while they prepare for the next limit.

It’s your job to determine who falls into what category and take advantage of their style. As long as this guy seems pretty solid, he’d be the perfect person to try and take the pot from on the turn. And, if he doesn’t fold and it goes chk/chk and you see his hand, then it only cost you one extra bet for a mound of information.

  2. Thanks for the reply silence. You made some really good points but that hand still has me stumped. The turn being a third diamond makes it that much more tricky. I think raising the flop and taking control would have made the rest of the hand easier.

If you raise the turn there’s a chance he would fold, but you have to put him on a really good hand since he four bet preflop. If he calls then most of the time you’ll be beat and the rest of the time he’ll have a draw and a chance to beat you.. If you raise and he three bets the turn QQ can’t be good so I’d fold losing 2 extra bets.

Another thing to consider is if you appeared to be passive that day then there’s a reason why someone would continue to bet without having a pair of queens beat. You’d have to think he’s really tricky for that to happen though.

But overall with the way it played out preflop I think folding is the best move. I also agree with silence that if you bet the river would be bad because it’s a situation where you’re only going to be called if he has you beat.

  4. thanks for the comment. I think that me posting the hand proves that I knew I didn’t do what I thought was right in the first place or it wouldn’t have bothered me so much in the first place.
